Fabulousness: The Princess & The Frog

This past weekend, Disney's The Princess and the Frog opened in theatres across the country - finally unveiling what the world has been waiting for... a Black Disney Princess.

Being not only an avid Disney fan, but a serious PATF fan from the beginning - of course, I saw it! As my little lady date, I took one of my littluns from church - Keran. (I heart her!). She was just as excited as I was, giving me a time update every two minutes, and getting upset when at 7:31 we were looking at previews and NOT our feature presentation!

As soon as Disney's trademark "When You Wish Upon A Star" came on, my eyes welled up with tears. I can remember hearing that song during the opening production credits of Sleeping Beauty...of Cinderella...of all Disney films, but never ever hearing it and anticipating seeing a magical face that looked like mine.

The movie was fabulous. It was filled with great songs - especially since it's set in 1920s New Orleans in the midst of a musical renaissance a la jazz! It also had a great princess plot - unlike the other Disney princesses, Tiana's priority wasn't to find love and be hoppily *smile* ever after...it was to fulfill her childhood dream (shared with her father) of being a restauranteur. How's that for an animated role model?!

Here are some pics from the movie premiere...

The princess herself! Anika Noni Rose. Absolutely fab.

AND it was #1 in the Box Office this weekend?! Yayyyyyy! I can not wait to see it again and to own it for myself!

Introducing... Mr. Maxwell David Joiner

After months of anticipation -- an overwhelming anticipation that can only be compared to that of a multi-platinum artist's final album hitting the stores in limited release -- the time has finally come!

On Monday, December 7, 2009 at 4:47am, Maxwell David Joiner was born to ultra-fabulous Mommy Veronica & uber cool Daddy Marcelus. Max came in like a man, 20" long and weighing in at more than 8 lbs! WOWzers!

To see him is to instantly love him. He was - hands down - the most alert newborn I have ever met! His gigantically gorgeous eyes soaked up every detail in the room. Every. Single. Detail. [Uncle Marcus thinks "it's because he's a one-month old already! He's a grown man!"]

Already you can see that Max is truly something special...which is only fitting as his parents are some of the most special people I know.

Congratulations Ronnie & Celus! I'm so thrilled for you both and can't wait to see your precious little family grow, love and live! Welcome Max! We've all been waiting for you!

My MINXperience!

After Veronica's Minx post, we were contacted by a couple Minx nail stylists - both offering their services of course. Based on her name alone - The Minxanista (how freakin' hot is that?) was our Minx professionelle of choice.

So... How was it?

First, let me say that the process itself is the simplest form of nail decor I've ever seen in my natural born life. LOL. As I tried to explain it to the Bradster and my guy-friends, they ALL replied something to the likes of "You have on Lee Press-On Nails for 2009? *blank stare*" Silly boys.

Anyways, the Minxanista began by giving me the standard manicure treatment - filing and shaping my nails, coniditioning my nail bed, the works. It provided a great foundation for any nail treatment PLUS gave me time to go through her book of Minx designs. (image pulled from Google)

She had houndstooth, leopard, plaid, checkered, some sort of floral pattern, and even a "It's A Boy/Girl!" for new Mommys-in-Minx *hint, hint*. LOL. Honestly, with all the choices I beyond overwhelmed. Veniece (The Minxanista) suggested I stick with the metallics as they're the most popular, she also pulled out an old copy of Ebony with a celeb cover rocking the Minx. Who was it? Beyonce, my celebrity BFF. I had a tough time deciding on which metallic (or "electric" in Minx-speak) color: gold, silver or red. At the end of the day, my Delta style won and I decided to rock the Red. OO-OOP to my Sorors!

Now on to the application process, a Minx applique is removed from the sheet and placed under a heating lamp. You can see it start to grow limp as it takes on the heat of the lamp. The heated applique is then placed on your finger-tips, smoothed to perfection and set to cool. Multiple this by 10. After all have been applied, they are smoothed over once more with a smoothing stick (??) and then trimmed to fit your nail perfectly.

This is where things got a bit difficult for me. Due to the curvature of my nails and their width (wide as ever!), all of the appliques didn't "smooth" at the tip. There was a bit of bunching. It didn't affect the overall look of the nails at all, but it did start to bother me as it made my nails highly susceptible to an early peel-off. (You peel to remove.) It also started to snag at my clothes which got annoying as well. However, a few of my nails were smoothed perfectly and proved to be no problem. (If you know me, you know that I cannot stand nail imperfections, a snag will drive me to go and purchase a nail clipper and file on the spot!)

Even with the slight snags, which probably wouldn't happen to most, the nails themselves were effin' fabulous. If I had a dime for every compliment I received, I'd be writing this post from a beach in a faraway luxurious island. (Maybe not, but I'd be doing something nice, that's for sure!) When I paid for things at the store, the cashier would grab my hands. I tried on shoes and got more compliments on my nails as they took OFF the shoes than I did with the shoes on! I talk with my hands so darn near every conversation I had was interrupted by an "OMG! Your nails?!?! They're gorgeous!" I thought that by them being red, it wouldn't stand out as much, but clearly I was WRONG.

The Minxanista said they'd last 5-7 days, which they did - even with the snags. (Which leads me to believe that if your nails don't bunch, they'll last 7days+) I washed dishes once and did regular living, and the nails withstood the pressure of it all.

Check out the Minx as I finish a full Corona! I'm still not a fan of beer.

At $45 for a full-set, with 5-7days being the average length of duration, Minx definitely wouldn't be my weekly deal. BUT would they be the perfect nail accessory for a special occasion, event, or even a sweet & simple Soiree?

Abso-effin'-lutely.

The Minxanista can be found at the Tip Toe Nail Studio (inside Salon Concepts) in Olde Montgomery by appointment only. Tell her that The Fabulous Duo sent you!

We'll Miss You, Mama Oprah

It's the end of an era. Whether or not you've been watching the outstanding 24th season of the Oprah Winfrey Show, you've probably heard by now that she has confirmed that next season will be her final one. Saying that 25 "feels right" Oprah announced on Friday's live show that the next 18 months will be a countdown to the end.

I'm sure with the launch of OWN (The Oprah Winfrey Network)--this lady has the best acronyms, hands down--she and the remainig ventures under HARPO will survive just fine. Still, it'll be different without someone asking the universal question"Who's on Oprah today?"

I think Oprah is the epitomy of fabulous, and undoubtedly one of the most influential people in America, regardless of one's personal opinion of her. Her philanthropy and overall joyous spirit is unmatched. And to know what humble beginning she came from is even more admirable. I agree 25 years is a good time to bow out...but in true Oprah fashion I'm sure she'll take her viewers and followers along with her on the rest of her many journeys.

One of my favorite specials is CNBC's The Oprah Effect. It's almost amazing to see how much influence she has on businesses and people's lives. Here's a link to CNBC.com where you can watch the entire show.

Well you know what that means...we've got about 17 months to get on the show!

Shhh! ... Somebody Went Shopping

Now usually we don't do this, but TFD gave into temptation and did a little shopping. In Cincinnati, don't sleep on the contemporary section at Kenwood Macy's. It's pretty good. We just couldn't pass up an extra 40% off already reduced prices in the new RACHEL by Rachel Roy section. So we picked up a few frocks to spruce up our wardrobes and to give us some options for upcoming fab gatherings and such.

Starting with Katelyn... She picked up this cute black and white dress for $20-something and 40% off. The cute glittery detailing at the waist is festive and fun. I can definitely see this with some black tights, one of her many pairs of heels and silver accessories. We all know Katelyn can accessorize her butt off!

She also picked up this long top with silver embellishments on the shoulders. A girly spin on your basic white top. Distressed denim and a tall heel, please!

And last but not least, she got this darling one-shoulder number. I love the purple leopard print. Yes, fab.
P.S. she also got her Steve Madden pumps and she "feels like Beyonce."

As for me, I have a 9-month baby bump so clearly we're just gonna keep hope alive that I go back to a Small in a few days/week-or-so after giving birth! Mama's got to look fly, too!
Of course, I went back to black. I can't help it. These ruched leggings have a flattering fit, and the flutter-sleeve top goes well with them. I paid less than $17 for each of these pieces.

Next up is this orange over-sized blouse. It's comfy and I like the big shirt look.

Not sure what I'm going to do about these grey lace leggings. They look hot in the pic to the right, in black. And I have been wanting an orange and grey combo. There are some grey MK suede heels that are begging to be worn with this outfit.

Lastly, I got this sheer party top. I was on the fence about this one too, but I like how it looks in the picture.

And with a gift card I finally got some booties. They're peep toe and Calvin Klein, and pretty darn fierce.

Sidenote: My plan was to return 2 items so that I can feel less guilty about shopping...but now I don't know! Ugh! What's a girl with buyer's remorse to do?!?

I'd describe the clothes in the RACHEL Rachel Roy collection as quirky, girly and everyday-glamorous. You can easily go from day to evening to late night in these looks without switching up a lot.

Lots of the pieces are relaxed and long, but they still have a great fit to the body. There's also lots of embellishment, metallics, silk and use of the color black. All cute trends to incorporate into your wardrobe today.
I must say, I like this collection and I've never been a Rachel Roy fan. I think these clothes look like me. Let's just hope Macy's doesn't keep putting them on sale!

Gap: Go Ho Ho!

The holiday season does not begin with the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade...it begins as soon as the Gap holiday commercials air.

Happy Holidays! Go Ho Ho!
